As the project manager of the University of Alberta Aero HLG team for the 2018-2019 year, I worked with my design team to develop an aircraft that could compete in the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International Aero Design competition. Our team designed built, and tested this aircraft over the course of 8 months.
Our aircraft competed in the Aero Design West competition in Los Angeles that year. Each team only had four takeoff attempts. Our team had to tackle a number of issues over the course of the competition including one landing gear failure and power supply issues. Every year the competition challenged our ability to problem solve and tackle challenges as a team. One of the most rewarding experiences of my undergraduate career.
Test Flight:
The months of design work cumulated in our first successful test flight, one of the most stressful moments of any design year.
This test flight revealed some initial issues with the longitudinal stability of the aircraft, which then had to be addressed with corrections to the elevator deflection and weight and balance.
