Every year our team developed an aircraft that could compete in the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International Aero Design competition. While I had participated in the club in previous years, 2016 was my first year attending competition in Van Nuys California.
In 2016 we were competing in the regular class of the competition, with the primary goal of lifting as much weight as possible. Our aerodynamics team pursued a fairly unconventional biplane design.
That year we had many challenges with electronics routing, unreliable landing gear, and an unpredictable aerodynamic profile. The landing gear failed on several takeoff attempts at competition, and eventually resulted in a crash on the second day of the competition.
While not a very successful year, I personally learned a lot by attending the competition. Getting to be involved in the aircraft construction, followed by the testing and troubleshooting at the competition itself taught me a lot about design and prototyping.
